Silas was born in Sechelt, grew up in Pender Harbour and has lived in the Town of Gibsons for ten years. He runs the award-winning literary publishing company Nightwood Editions and served as a Sunshine Coast school trustee for nine years, including six as Board Chair and five representing all boards provincially in labour relations/bargaining. Other boards or committees he has served on include VOICE on the Coast, the Royal BC Museum, Sunshine Coast Arts Council, Area A Advisory Planning Commission and Association of Canadian Publishers. In 2009, Silas was named by the industry publication Quill & Quire as one of the “twelve to watch” in Canadian publishing.
He has a master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Victoria and bachelor’s degree in English literature from UBC. His wife Amanda is a Team Leader at the Ministry of Children and Family Development, and his daughters Simone and Eloise represent the fourth generation of his family on the Coast.
Silas was first elected to Gibsons Council in 2014, when he was also appointed to serve as the Town’s Director on the Sunshine Coast Regional District. He ran for Council on a platform to:
- promote positive and constructive governance and community engagement;
- advocate for affordable housing & transportation, accessibility of services to all ages, safe roads for pedestrians, post-secondary opportunities and living-wage jobs; and
- improve collaboration with other levels of government, local business and the arts community for positive initiatives such as the Gibsons Public Market and community economic development.
