The George

George Hotel and Residences Development Application

The George Hotel project received approval of the requested Official Community Plan amendment and Zoning Bylaw amendment on October 6, 2015.

The project has now moved to the detailed design stage, in preparation for start of construction which is planned for summer 2017. Before construction of the George may begin there are several requirements and regulatory reviews to be completed. This web page will continue to provide regular updates on the status of this significant project.

Project Update - June 2017 - Road Closure and Hotel Use Covenant - FAQ's here

On June 20th, the Town started the process for the closure of a portion of Winn Road in exchange for land for a new publically owned pedestrian Plaza between the Hotel and Residences. This is a land exchange, not the sale of Winn Road. The Town will own the Plaza, the developer will be responsible for all maintenance. Beneath the plaza, an underground Airspace Parcel will be sold to the George for the appraised value of $61,600 (see the appraisal in the June 20, 2017 report to Council below).

Notice of this Road Exchange and Disposition will be posted in the newspapers and is attached here for your information. The public has an opportunity to provide comments at the Council meeting of July 11th, 2017 at 7 pm. The illustration below outlines the proposed changes to Winn Road.

On June 20th, 2017 Council endorsed the terms of a Hotel Use Covenant which stipulates that  the hotel portion cannot be stratified. This provides additional assurances that the site will be used for a hotel and avoid a conversion to residential use.

Both the road closure and the covenant are requirements from the Development Agreement for the George Hotel project. Further information can be found in the staff reports listed in the table at the end of this page.
