The Planning Department is made up of the Director of Planning Chris Marshall and the Planning Assistant Jeffrey Paleczny. There are two main types of work handled by the Planning Department and they can be categorized as Long Term Planning and Short Term Planning. Long Term Planning includes work with the community on reviewing the Town’s Official Community Plan, developing new Neighbourhood Plans, the Trail and Bicycle Plan and the review of relevant bylaws. Short Term Planning includes the processing of subdivision and development applications.
The Planning Department endeavors to incorporate the principles of sustainability into all the work we do. The Town’s award winning Official Community Plan entitled “The Smart Plan” outlines the Environmental, Social and Economic considerations that must be taken into account when reviewing development applications or developing new neighbourhood plans. As part of any new application for development in the Town of Gibsons, an applicant is required to fill in the “Smart Development Checklist” and summarize how their development meets the Town’s goal of sustainable development.
All reports written by the Planning Department include a section on sustainability that summarizes how the development application or issue in the report meets the Town’s goals of sustainability
Role of the Planning Department
The majority of the Planning Department’s work is covered under Part 26 of the Local Government Act including:
- Requirements of the Official Community Plan;
- The Board of Variance;
- Zoning Regulations;
- Regulation of Signs;
- Designation of Development Permit Applications;
- Development Variance Permits; and
- Subdivision and Development Requirements
