Collectible Garbage

Bylaw No 1252 defines collectible garbage as garbage capable of being contained in a Wildlife wildlife-resistant container, but shall not include the following:

  • collectible organics
  • recyclable materials as mandated by RecycleBC, including beverage containers, packaging and printed paper, cardboard, and aluminum cans
  • grass cuttings
  • tree or hedge clippings or other garden refuse
  • hazardous (including pathogenic and radioactive wastes)
  • explosive or flammable substances
  • chemicals which may create hazardous working conditions
  • material hot enough to start combustion
  • waste oil or petroleum by-products
  • paint, tires, lumber, demolition materials, rocks, gravel or soil, stumps or timber
  • fish feed bags
  • batteries
  • undigested septic sludge

Never store garbage that has an odour outside unless it is in a bear-resistant container. Find certified bear-resistant products on the IGBC bear-resistant product list.

Never leave garbage on your balcony or porch, even if it is screened. Bears are good climbers and can easily break into porches, garages and even unsecured homes.

Do not put garbage out until 7:00 am on collection day.

Use containers with locking lids, or use a bungy cord to secure it.

Stash food scraps, especially meat, fish, bones, and fruit by-products in the freezer or in an airtight container until you can dispose of them properly.
