Winter Response Shelter

On November 5, 2019, Gibsons’ Council approved leasing the Marine Room (located in the bottom level of the Arts Building at 464 South Fletcher Road) to RainCity Housing for the purposes of operating a temporary winter shelter. This was deemed necessary following a fire at the Salvation Army premises on Gibsons Way, where the winter shelter was initially set to be housed.

On November 20, 2019, BC Housing approved the funding required to operate the winter shelter, as well as funding to convert an existing washroom into a shower.

The shelter, which opened on Sunday, December 1, 2019, is open from 6pm to 8am, 7 days a week, and can accommodate up to 15 people.

Residents are offered a hot meal when the doors open, and a reservation system is in place to eliminate the requirement for people to line up outdoors for a bed.

How to Get Involved

While RainCity Housing has secured funding to provide meal service to people using the shelter, they would also like to extend an invitation to the community to donate meals.

Currently, they are seeking meals for 15 people on Friday and Saturday evenings (with delivery around 6:30pm) and have created a “take them a meal” page for the Gibsons shelter.
