On January 28, 2020, Council adopted Bylaw 1252-03, 2019 which makes it a ticket-able offense to place recyclables (as mandated by RecycleBC) into the waste stream.

Two key factors drove the decision: First, the Sechelt Landfill is rapidly running out of room and we need to divert as much waste as possible away from that space. Second, the increased bear conflict we experienced this past fall was largely related to recyclables (such as cat food tins) which had been placed in garbage bins, instead of cleaned and taken to the Recycle Depot.

This bylaw amendment gives our Bylaw Officer a “next step” when chronic offenders do not respond to educational efforts.
