Sanitary Sewer System

What We Do
The Town of Gibsons owns and operates a comprehensive sanitary sewer system that safely collects, treats, and discharges wastewater from homes and businesses throughout our community. This includes:
- A network of trunk sewers and service connections
- Pumping lift stations, including the major Prowse Road Lift Station
- The Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) on Stewart Road
Our system ensures wastewater is responsibly treated to protect public health and the environment.
How We Fund It
The Town’s sanitary sewer utility is funded by:
- User fees and parcel taxes billed to property owners
- Grants from provincial and federal governments (when available)
- Borrowed funds for large capital projects
By steadily building reserve funds, we aim to reduce borrowing and keep the system financially sustainable.
The sanitary sewer utility covers:
- The infrastructure: pipes, manholes, pumps, the treatment plant and lift stations.
- The people and equipment needed to operate and maintain these critical assets.
Together, these make it possible to handle wastewater safely, efficiently, and in compliance with provincial and federal regulations.
Help Keep Our Sewer System Working Properly
-
Don’t flush wipes, paper towels, or feminine products—even if labeled “flushable.” These clog pumps and pipes.
-
Never pour fats, oils or grease down the drain. Cool it, can it, and dispose of it in your garbage.
-
Use sink strainers to catch food scraps and hair.
Keeping these materials out of the sewer helps prevent costly backups, overflows, and damage.
