The Gibsons & District Volunteer Fire Department (GDVFD) improves the quality of life in our fire protection district by reducing suffering from loss of life, destruction of property, and damage to the environment. This is achieved through dedication to training, public education and fire prevention by using up to date equipment and techniques.
At December 31, 2020, the GDVFD comprised 41 active volunteer firefighters, five new recruits and four paid full-time staff members – one Fire Chief, one Training Officer, one Fire Prevention Officer and one Fire Inspector. The department has been providing life and property protection to the West Howe Sound Fire Protection District since 1937 and covers an operational area of approximately 23 sq. kilometers.
The Fire Protection Area incorporates the municipality of the Town of Gibsons and portions of electoral areas E and F of the Sunshine Coast Regional District and serves a population of approximately 10,000 people. The fire department is a function of the SCRD and the Town is a participating member of that service.
The fire department provides services to the public in the form of fire suppression, emergency medical first response, rescue, extrication, hazardous materials control, fire prevention, public education, public assistance and mutual aid.
