Town of Gibsons Launches Infill Housing Design Competition

January 14, 2025 – The Town of Gibsons is excited to announce the launch of an Infill Housing Design Competition (IHDC). Infill housing refers to development that occurs within already built-up areas with existing services. By developing vacant lots or subdividing larger properties, infill housing helps create affordable, inclusive, and complete neighbourhoods.

The IHDC aims to inspire innovative and thoughtful designs while streamlining the development approvals process. This initiative builds on the Town’s existing garden suite programpromoting housing solutions that benefit both residents and the community.

Residents of British Columbia are invited to take part in the competition. Submissions will be accepted in two categories: small lot (3-4 units) and long lot (5-6 units). Submissions should embody affordability and cost-effectiveness, flexibility and creativity, inclusivity and livability, and good neighbourhood design. Participants may submit multiple designs in each category, either as individuals or as part of a team. Submissions must be sent in PDF format to Jack Desante, Urban Systems via email at jdesante@urbansystems.ca by March 10, 2025.

Winning Designs will receive cash awards of $2,500 for first place, $1,250 for second place, and $500 for third place. A People’s Choice award recipient, as voted on by the community, will receive a $500 award. Winning designs will also be featured by the Town of Gibsons and marketed as pre-reviewed infill housing designs. Development applicants using these pre-reviewed designs will receive an expedited building permit timeline and (in certain circumstances) will be eligible for reduced fees.
