Restored Persephone to Be Officially Unveiled at Community Celebration

Gibsons, BC — The Town of Gibsons will host an official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the restored Persephone on Saturday, May 30, at 12:00 p.m. in Inglis Park, Gibsons Landing, as part of the Molly’s Reach 100th Anniversary celebration.

The event marks the completion of a major community-led restoration that brought new life to one of the Sunshine Coast’s most recognized landmarks. Made famous through the iconic Canadian television series The Beachcombers, the Persephone has long been a symbol of Gibsons’ coastal heritage and a destination for visitors from across Canada and around the world.

The boat was originally donated to the Town by the Smith family, who owned and operated the vessel during the filming of the series. After years of exposure to the coastal elements, the hull suffered significant rot and deterioration and required extensive repairs. In October 2024, the Town launched the Save the Persephone campaign to support the restoration effort.

Nearly $13,000 was raised through community donations, alongside a $25,000 contribution from BC Ferries. Restoration work was led by the Spani Developments crew, with additional support from volunteers, local businesses, and individuals who donated materials, labour, and expertise throughout the project.

“The Persephone means a great deal to people here and to generations of Canadians—and people worldwide—who grew up watching The Beachcombers,” said Silas White, Mayor of Gibsons. “It’s a symbol of our community’s history, Indigenous roots, small-community coastal character and connection to the sea. So many people have stepped forward with time, skills, donations, and support to help bring this important piece of shared history home.”

The ribbon-cutting event will feature remarks from Mayor Silas White and the Honourable Anne Kang, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport and representatives from BC Ferries. Community members are welcome to attend the unveiling celebration and help mark this significant milestone.
