The announcement that Howe Sound Pulp and Paper Mill will shut down its operations is difficult news for the Sunshine Coast.
For generations, the mill in Port Mellon has been an important part of our local economy. First and foremost, our thoughts are with the workers and their families whose lives have been turned upside down by this news.
The effects will also extend to businesses in Gibsons and throughout the Sunshine Coast that provide goods and services to the mill and its employees, as well as to the community organizations and activities supported by those who work there.
“This is a very sad day for our community, and my thoughts are with all those affected by this announcement,” says Mayor Silas White.“The mill supports many businesses in our Town, and its presence is woven into everyday life across the Coast. Its employees are our friends and neighbours, coaches, volunteers and community members. We recognize that this transition will be difficult, and we will be thinking about how we can support our local economy and community through this time.”
