The Town of Gibsons welcomes today’s announcement that Howe Sound Pulp and Paper will reopen following scheduled maintenance.
“On behalf of Council, I applaud the Province for reaching an agreement with Domtar and for taking action to support the continued operation of Howe Sound Pulp and Paper and the jobs and economic activity that depend on it,” said Mayor Silas White.
Howe Sound Pulp and Paper is an important part of the Sunshine Coast’s economy, supporting local jobs, families and businesses across the region. The mill’s continued operation is also important to the broader forest sector in British Columbia, which is facing significant challenges.
The Town recognizes the work undertaken by Domtar and the Province to reach this point and welcomes their commitment to working collaboratively to support the mill’s continued operation.
While today’s announcement provides welcome certainty around the planned reopening, the forest sector continues to face significant pressures. The Town will continue to support efforts that contribute to a strong and resilient local economy and the long-term well-being of Sunshine Coast communities.
For the many people and families connected to Howe Sound Pulp and Paper, today’s announcement is welcome news.
