Shaw Road Affordable Housing Project
The Shaw Road Affordable Housing Project is a partnership between the Town of Gibsons, the Sunshine Coast Affordable Housing Society (SCAHS), senior levels of government, and community partners to increase the supply of affordable rental housing in Gibsons. The project provides a mix of studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom homes, including accessible units and housing dedicated to essential service workers.
SHAW PLACE Gibsons
This 40-unit affordable apartment building in Gibsons offers studio, 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom, and 3-bedroom units, with dedicated suites for essential service workers. Several of these suites are accessible, making them suitable for seniors or others with mobility challenge. Built in 2024, each unit features a heat pump/air conditioner to lower energy costs. The building has shared laundry, several lovely common areas, and is centrally located near transit and shops. Funding came from federal, provincial, and municipal sources, with contributions from the Sunshine Coast Affordable Housing Society (SCAHS) and land provided by the Town at a nominal rate.
O’SHEA PLACE Gibsons
This 33-unit apartment building in Gibsons, completed in May 2026, features studio, 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom, and 3-bedroom units, including dedicated suites for essential service workers. An on-site childcare space is currently in progress. Funding sources include federal, provincial, and municipal contributions, and land provided by the Town of Gibsons.
Project Background
The project originated in 2017 as part of the Town’s efforts to address the growing need for affordable rental housing on the Sunshine Coast. Extensive community engagement, including open houses, workshops, design charrettes, and public hearings, helped shape the development and address neighbourhood concerns.
In 2019, Council approved amendments to the Official Community Plan and zoning bylaws to support the project at its current location. Over the following years, the project secured funding, completed design and permitting processes, and overcame several financing challenges before construction began. The Town also contributed land and financial support through its Affordable Housing Reserve Fund to help make the project possible.
Today, the Shaw Road Affordable Housing Project represents one of the largest affordable housing investments in Gibsons’ history and is an important step toward providing stable, below-market rental housing for local workers, families, seniors, and residents with diverse housing needs.
