Gibsons Bylaw Officers Honoured for Heroic Life-Saving Actions
GIBSONS, BC – The Town of Gibsons is proud to announce that two of its Bylaw Enforcement Officers, Sue Booth and Tamara Jaswal, have been awarded the Leadership and Valour Award by the Local Government Compliance and Enforcement Association (LGCEA). The prestigious award was presented at the Association’s annual conference on Thursday, Aril 10, in recognition of a courageous act that helped avert a potential tragedy earlier this year.
On the morning of February 3, 2025, while on duty in Gibsons, Booth and Jaswal noticed smoke rising from the roof of a residential home. Realizing the danger, they immediately rushed to the property, where they began knocking on doors to alert the residents—who were completely unaware that a fire had started above them.
Inside the home, tenants in the basement were still going about their morning routines. Thanks to the officers’ quick thinking and persistence, all occupants were able to evacuate safely. Emergency crews arrived moments later to contain the fire, which had grown significantly in intensity.
“Their bravery, leadership and commitment to the community reflect the very essence of this award,” said Mayor Silas White. “They acted decisively under pressure, and went far beyond the expected scope of their duties. Their actions quite literally saved lives, and we are incredibly proud of them.”
The Leadership and Valour Award recognizes individuals who demonstrate:
-
- Valor and bravery
- Exceptional courage under pressure
- Selfless dedication
- Going above and beyond
Booth and Jaswal’s actions serve as a powerful reminder of the important role that bylaw officers play in community safety and public service.
