What is Active Transportation?

Active transportation includes any type of human-powered transportation, including walking, cycling, skateboarding, or using a mobility aid. E-scooters and e-bikes can also fit this category and in some cases may use the same trails and pathways.

Providing more options for active transportation can play an important role in promoting a healthy, equitable, and accessible community.

About the Active Transportation Network Plan

We are working on making it easier for you to walk, bike, scoot, or roll throughout the Town of Gibsons.

The Town of Gibsons is developing an Active Transportation Network Plan (ATNP) to improve walking, cycling, and rolling connections and make active transportation a more comfortable and convenient option for people of all ages and abilities. The with input from community members and stakeholders, the ATNP will help the Town prioritize investments and decision-making around active transportation improvements.

We are working with Urban Systems Ltd. to develop this grant-funded project.

Current Status

February 2024

We are now in the final phase of the Active Transportation Network Plan project. The project team collected valuable feedback on the active transportation network and the level of support for proposed improvements. Feedback will be used to refine the recommendations and ensure the Plan reflects the community’s interests and priorities. Based on the input received from community members, we will be reviewing and updating some of the projects identified, how they have been prioritized and provide recommendations for implementation.  The Plan will be finalized and presented to Council in the spring of 2024.

Thank you to everyone who participated and shared their feedback! Both engagement summaries are available to view by clickiing on the buttons below.

Virtually all of our active transportation projects include input from Transportation Choices – Sunshine Coast (TraC).

We also actively support Sustainable Sunshine Coast, a newly launched initiative spearheaded by Sunshine Coast Tourism, which is focused on encouraging alternative transportation and supporting tourism businesses and experiences that are better for the environment.
