Homeless Outreach Program - Town of Gibsons

Support for people experiencing homelessness or who are at risk of homelessness

About the Program

The Town of Gibsons has partnered with BC Housing to provide a homeless outreach consultant to support the community. The goal is to engage people who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness, by assessing clients’ needs, assisting with personal goals, and connecting individuals and families with housing and appropriate services.

This program assists approximately 40 clients, including those in supportive housing, cold-weather shelters, and outdoor environments. Clients also include individuals seeking support from the Salvation Army and Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH).

The program coordinator employs a multifaceted approach, including regular site visits to supportive housing and cold weather shelters, outreach to outdoor environments, and coordination with the Salvation Army. Her efforts focus on building trust with clients, offering mental health and substance abuse support, and providing access to resources and referrals. She responds to clients in distress at any time and organizes group activities to foster community and belonging.

Support services include distributing essentials like warm clothing, blankets, meals, tents, and hygiene kits. Chantelle conducts assessments to identify long-term needs and connects clients with appropriate services. The Cold Weather Shelter operates from October to April, with Chantelle providing regular drop-in support, mental health checks, and assistance with BC Housing applications. The program also offers themed evenings and a shower service at the newly renovated Marine Room.

Collaboration with the Salvation Army involves twice-weekly drop-in support, addressing immediate needs, mental health support, and information about available services. Chantelle uses culturally sensitive approaches, including crisis intervention and suicide assessments, and occasionally assists the RCMP with missing persons and wellness checks.

A monthly self-care event at the Marine Room, supported by local volunteers and donations, enhances clients’ well-being. Positive outcomes have been achieved through dedicated outreach efforts, employing a trauma-informed approach, and fostering collaborations. The program has expanded to include the “Everybody Deserves a Home” rental initiative, which supports sober individuals in supportive housing or at risk of homelessness, focusing on short and long-term goals like budgeting, job placement, and overall wellness.
