Recognizing National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Message from the Mayor
As we approach National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we must reflect on our shared history and commit to meaningful action. This day honours the children lost to the residential school system, as well as the survivors, families, and communities still impacted by its legacy, including here on the Sunshine Coast. Acknowledging this truth is only the first step; education and action must follow. True reconciliation requires us to confront painful truths, educate ourselves, and listen to Indigenous voices so that we can move toward healing together.
This year, Town of Gibsons staff and councillors participated in an educational workshop called The Paddle Journey, led by Squamish Nation Elder and Knowledge Keeper Faye Halls and her daughter Candice Halls-Howcroft. Through oral storytelling and an interactive approach, we explored history from a Squamish perspective, from first contact with Europeans to the ongoing effects of colonialism today. It was an honour to have had this experience.
For all those wishing to recognize National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, I encourage you to join the shíshálh Nation for Orange Shirt Day on September 30, beginning at 11:00 a.m. at the Residential School Monument Site. On Saturday, September 28, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., visit the Museum to explore the Kwekwinmut/Pieces of the Past stone tool exhibit, co-curated with the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Nation. Listen to the Nation’s origin story from Ch’k ̱w’elhp and learn about Sḵwx̱wú7mesh culture and values.
Additionally, I encourage everyone to visit the Town of Gibsons website for a range of Indigenous-centred materials—whether you prefer to watch, read, or listen, there are resources available to support your learning journey: gibsons.ca/truth-and-reconciliation-day.
We continue to stand with our Indigenous friends and neighbours, recognizing their strength and resilience. Let this day be one not only of remembrance but also of commitment to ongoing learning, solidarity and action.
On behalf of Council,
Mayor Silas White
