Town of Gibsons Launches Low Carbon Resilience Climate Action Plan
May 13, 2025 – The Town of Gibsons is taking a significant step toward a more climate-resilient future with the development of its first Low Carbon Resilience Climate Action Plan—an integrated strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while preparing the community to adapt to the impacts of climate change.
In partnership with the Community Energy Association (CEA), the Plan will combine climate mitigation (reducing emissions) with climate adaptation (adjusting to changing conditions to build resilience to climate impacts) into a single, forward-looking framework.
The process will be supported by a Low Carbon Resilience Advisory Team (LCRAT), which is made up of representatives from local organizations, youth, seniors, and climate experts. This team will provide key insights, help guide the Plan’s direction, and ensure it reflects the diverse voices in Gibsons.
“Gibsons has long been recognized as a leader in climate action practices and planning,” said Mayor Silas White. “This Plan represents the next big step—integrating climate science, community input, and local leadership into a practical roadmap to build resilience for our town and help it thrive in the face of change.”
The Plan will explore opportunities to reduce emissions in areas such as transportation and buildings, strengthen risk reduction and preparedness, support natural asset management, and foster equitable and inclusive climate solutions. Final recommendations will be presented to Council in late 2025.
To ensure the Plan aligns with the community’s values and priorities, public engagement is a key part of the process. A community survey is now open at gibsons.ca/lcrcap and will remain available until Friday, May 30, 2025.
